Who am I?

I'm from Houston, a graduate of the University of Texas, a fan of the Houston Astros and Houston Texans. But this blog will be about the "greater sports", whatever that means.

Sportsman of the Week Ending 3/27/2016

Another thrilling weekend of college basketball, and another hero emerges on a favored team.  Brice Johnson of the North Carolina Tar Heels came through time and time again to push his number one seeded team to the Final Four in Houston.  The only number one seed to make it.  Johnson scored 45 points and 22 rebounds in just under 70 minutes of action in defeats of surprising Indiana and gritty Notre Dame.  An efficient he was, at 15-26 from the field, and 15-17 from the line.  He also swatted away four shots from the opponents.  If Carolina is to cut down the nets once again, they'll need our Sportsman of the Week on top of his game this weekend in Houston

Sportsman of the Week Ending 3/20/2016

March was indeed mad the first weekend of the NCAA Basketball tournament, but one thing you can count on is a Naismith Award finalist to lead his highly seeded team through to victory.  Buddy Hield ensured that his Oklahoma Sooners bracket wasn't busted as he led his team to the Sweet 16.  In the process, he poured in 63 points (31.5 PPG, tops in the tournament) while snagging an impressive 12 rebounds.  His 36 against VCU were all needed as the Sooners squeaked by with a 4 point win.  And he was an effective shooter, knocking in 56% of his shots from the field, with 9 3-pointers in 20 shots, putting a dagger in California State Bakersfield and Virginia Commonweath's upset hopes.  And don't bother fouling him, as he was 84% from the line in 19 shots.  Hield looks to continue to lead the capable Sooners onward to the Final Four in Houston, and is our Longhorndave Sportsman of the Week!

Sportsman of the Week Ending 3/13/2016

March Madness has descended upon the nation, and the national top seed Kansas Jayhawks have been an unstoppable force.  The last time the Jayhawks lost?  January 25 in a Big Monday meltdown against Iowa State in Ames.  Led by our Sportsman of the week Perry Ellis, the Jayhawks have marched through the toughest conference in America to win the regular season by 2 games, then conference tournament with a double digit victory.  The senior forward pumped in 20 points per game in the conference tournament (besting his season average of 17 points), while snatching 15 rebounds, 2 steals, and 2 blocks in the sweep of Big 12 also rans.  Senior leadership is a big reason teams win the tournament, and Perry Ellis brings that and more as our Longhorndave Sportsman of the Week!

Sportsman of the Week Ending 3/6/2016

The Masters is arriving soon, and we may have an early 2016 favorite to take the Green Jacket.  Adam Scott of Australia seems to be in top form by winning the World Golf Championships-Cadillac Championship in Miami, Florida, this week, to go with his win at the Honda Classic at Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, the week before.  Both were well attended by PGA elite and each was won by one stroke.  Noting that Scott was one of those who used to use an anchor putter that is now banned, he seems to have no issues taking the money club in his hand and winning.  Twice before the second weekend in March, he looks to get his second Green Jacket after his first in 2013.  Good enough to win Sportsman of the Week!

Sportsman of the Week Ending 2/28/2016

The Sportsman of the Week this week is leading his Golden State Warriors to be perhaps the Team of the Century, if not best team in history (as they assault the Chicago Bulls record of 72 wins in a single season).  Despite doubters and critics (that include former NBA legends), All-world Stephen Curry simply cannot be stopped.  The reigning MVP averaged 44 points per game over a 4-game winning streak.  More impressive, he's averaging over a point per minute played; he was on the bench at least 12 minutes of all four games, a full quarter.  Further, in the epic OT win on Saturday night against the rival Oklahoma City Thunder, he broke his own single season record for 3-pointers in a season (288 and counting), became the first player ever to have back-to-back games of 10 3-pointers or more (10 and 12), and tied for most 3-pointers in a game (12).  During the week, he also broke the record of consecutive games with a 3-pointer (129).  And yes, he ended the game with what to most people would be a miracle 3-pointer, but frankly was just within his range at 37 feet.  You cannot deny he is the best player in the game, and certainly our Sportsman of the Week!
